Granting LGAs Autonomy Not Necessary-Tony Uranta

The Executive Secretary of the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), Mr. Tony Uranta has said granting autonomy to the over 774 Local Government Area councils in Nigeria is not what is needed now, but a complete restructuring of government.

The social activist, who said this Saturday in Lagos, noted that if the Lawmakers go ahead and pass the bill proposing the financial independence of this 3rd tier of government, it will only aggravate the situation further and increase the level of corruption we say we want to solve. He also added that more state will be deprived of what ordinarily should come to them.

Explaining further, Mr. Uranta shared "It would not be fair to grant autonomy when states like Lagos, which obviously has more population than Kano, is told they can't have more than 20 LGAs, while Kano has 44 LGAs backed by the constitution. Again, why will a state like Bayelsa, with all the oil reserve have only have 8 LGAs, while Kano keeps 44? This is not right and unless this is addressed, we wouldn't be solving the problem with LGA autonomy."
