Teletubbies Actor, Simon Sheldon Barnes dies aged 52

Simon Sheldon Barnes who played Tinky Winky in the children’s TV series Teletubbies has died.
Barnes was 52 when he passed away. The father-of-three was initially reluctant to take on the role of the purple Teletubby but the gamble paid off when the show became a smash hit.
He was reported as saying: ‘I started my career as a ballet dancer and had just started working as a choreographer.’
'I thought it was a bit of a risky move but it certainly paid off.’
The actor revealed that the cast used to receive so much fan mail that that they were like ‘The Beatles or the Take That of children’s television.’
But his character wasn’t without controversy, Barnes predecessor was sacked for suggesting that the handbag wearing Teletubby was gay.
Addressing the rumours Barnes said: ‘People always ask me if Tinky Winky is gay but the character is supposed to be a three-year-old so the question is really quite silly.’ 
Barnes was the uncle of Inbetweeners star Emily Atack who played Charlotte on the show.
The actress took to Twitter to pay tribute to her uncle saying: ‘My wonderful uncle Sam Barnes has been taken for us all so suddenly.’

Barnes was also the brother in law of Poldark actor Robert Daws.
