The FBI, CIA as well as the NSA have warned its citizens against buying
and using Huawei and ZTE, over concerns that they may be used as surveillance
gadget by the Chinese.
Trouble started for these companies back in 2012, after a
House Intelligence Committee raised an eyebrow over their close ties with the
Chinese government.
As a result of this, the US government placed a ban on
importation of both brands to the states.
Now, this concern has been once again raised by FBI director
Chris Wray.
Wray in a hearing Tuesday, said: “We're deeply concerned
about the risks of allowing any company or entity that is beholden to foreign
governments that don't share our values to gain positions of power inside our
telecommunications networks.”
It was a big blow for Huawei, because majority of U.S. phone
purchases still go through carriers.
Huawei, however issued a response, accusing the US instead of
“inhibiting [its] business in the U.S. market”.
“Huawei is trusted by governments and customers in 170
countries worldwide and poses no greater cybersecurity risk than any ICT
vendor, sharing as we do common global supply chains and production
capabilities,” Huawei representative added.
