Blessing Okagbare smashes 22-year-old African record

Nigerian Olympic and championship medalist, Blessing Okagbare- Ighoteguonor in grand style smashed a 22-year-old African record hitherto held by Mary Onyali last weekend.
Ighoteguonor’s 22.04secs run in the 200m race which held at the Wes Kittley Invitational Track and Field Meet at the Abilene Christian University, made sure that Onyali’s 22.07secs record at a meet in Switzerland in 1996, was broken.
Asides setting the pace for other African athletes, this record also stands as the new national record in the women’s 200m.
Until last weekend, Okagbare’s personal best had been 22.23secs, a feat she attained during the 2014 Eugene Diamond League.
Mary Onyali, pleased with this achievement told ThisDay: “My 200m African record went to my little sister yesterday. Congrats Ble-Ble Baby ! Now we are back on track!! Thanks for keeping this in the family Kitty; While we hunt for the other one ! On a mission. Stay tuned”.
