"People dying of Obesity and Diabetes in my country is a prove of prosperity" – Malaysian Lawmaker

In what has been described by commentators as an embarrassing statement, a Malaysian Lawmaker, Datuk Bung Moktar Radin has said the recent increase in obesity-related deaths and diseases is a prove that his country is prospering, SAYS reports.
The MP who said this, while debunking remarks made by Opposition leader Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, also claimed that the high incident of diabetes shows that Malaysians are not living in harsh economic conditions.
His words: "I heard that the Opposition leader said many people have no job opportunities and are lacking in consumption of healthy food," he was quoted as saying by Astro Awani.
"No such thing. Our country is most blessed with food," he added.
Bung Moktar insisted, Malaysia is fortunate because its people can afford to overeat,
He noted: “In fact more Malaysians die from overeating than anything else.
"Many are obese, have diabetes, many have high blood pressure, many have heart diseases."
He also argued that this was a result of Malaysians eating meat everyday.
"They eat meat everyday, they eat chicken meat everyday!" he exclaimed.
