Prisoner gets additional 15 years for raping fellow inmate

A South African Regional Court sitting in Empangeni has added another 15 years to the present jail term of a 39-year-old in-mate, after he was found guilty of raping another prisoner.
Sibusiso Thokozani Manqele had in May 2017 visited the cell of the victim and threatened to stab him with a sharpened toothbrush if he refused his advances before he molested the 24-year-old, the Mercury reports.
According to police spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbhele "The accused left a terrified victim inside his cell and went away. The victim reported the incident to a prison warder."
Mbhele added that the Empangeni police opened a case of rape after the complaint was lounged.
The case was later transferred to Empangeni Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for investigation.
"Manqele was immediately charged for rape and taken to court. He was convicted and sentenced, after his trial," Mbhele said.
The Police mouthpiece said that this proves that there is justice in this country to anyone who has been a victim of crime regardless of who they may be.
"The sentence will send a message to others who think that they can get away with crime, committed whilst in custody," she added.
